Residency in Primary Care at the Marion VA Medical Center

Description of Program:
This one year residency at the Marion, IL VAMC will provide extensive clinical experience in primary care with treatment and management of ocular disease as well as low vision rehabilitation.  The resident will assist with direct patient care and the teaching of student interns.  Other responsibilities include attending and/or lecturing at seminars.

Program Mission Statement:
The mission of the optometry residency program at the Marion VAMC is to provide optometric graduates with extensive clinical training and experience in a multidisciplinary heal care setting.  Residents will have the opportunity to provide comprehensive eye care to patients with multiple medical problems and to utilize specialty services provided within the hospital.  This residency will encourage critical thinking and will give the resident the opportunity to understand ocular disease in greater depth while practicing in a hospital-based setting.

Educational Opportunities:
The resident will attend weekly optometry clinic conferences where discussions of various ocular disease or low vision topics will take place.  The resident will engage in case discussions of specific patients as they are seen in the clinic.  The resident will participate in journal club discussions two to three times per month. In addition, the resident will be encouraged to conduct their own literature research and complete a document of publishable quality as well.

Teaching Responsibilities for Resident/Graduate Student:
The resident will provide some supervision of optometry students during the last half of the program.  The resident will also provide lectures approximately every other month to students and the rest of the optometry staff.

Research Responsibilities:
Residents are required to write a paper of publishable quality or present a paper or poster at a national meeting.

Other Information:
Starting date on or about July 1. Expected weekly hours: 40.  8 weeks of on-call duty.
